The death of Monsignor O’Brien, Rector of St. John’s College, is reported from Sydney.

-Sergeant H. Voyle, of the New Zealand Samoan Force, arrived back in Stratford by the mail train last night, suffering only from a slight cold.

Sir T. A. Coglan retires from the Agent-Generalship of New South Wales at the end of this month. The Victorian Government has consented to Mr Mcßride, the Victorian Agent-General, taking over the duties pending a new appointment being made.

The photograph of the late Mr E. G. Allsworth, a former chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, is to be added to the row of photographs of exchairmen now adorning the wall of the Board room. This will complete the list, states the News.

■Out of twenty applications for the position of assistant lady teacher at the Gisborne High School, Miss Holmden, M.A., assistant in the secondary department of the Waihi District High School, has been selected for the post, and will take up her duties about May Ist.

The late Mr John Bollard, ex M.P., for Eden, was a native of County Wicklow, Ireland, where his father was a farmer of some note. Mr Bollard was brought up on a farm, and received his education at a Church of England School, at the same time acquiring special training in the science and practice of agriculture and pastoral farming. He arrived in New Zealand in 18(30, and shortly afterwards went to the Australian goldfields, but his stay there was not prolonged. While in New South Wales he superintended the shipment of a large draft of horses for the Armstrong Artillery, then serving against the Maoris in the "Waikato. Mr Bollard also served in the Auckland Militia. After the war he settled at Avondale, near Auckland, and had resided their ever since. Mr Bollard had taken an active part in local politics for nearly forty years, and entered Parliament in 1896, when he defeated Mr Jackson Palmer for the Eden seat, which he retained until he retired at the end of last session.
