MEDICAL MAN’S CHARACTER AT STAKE. Per Pbess Association. Gisborne, March 18. The Supreme Court was engaged hearing a civil action, Hr. William Patrick McEldowney, of Portsmouth, England v. Mrs H. J; Buttimoro, of Gisborne. The claim was for £6OOO damages for slander. The statement of claim alleges that defendant, niece of one James Gibson, deceased, spoke defamatory words concerning the plaintiff, who is a nephew of deceased, alleging that he was given .to drink, and as a consequence Gibson’s will was altered, and a clause devising land values at £6OOO to plaintiff was revoked, no provision being made for Evidence in support of plaintiff’s claim was taken in England. Defendant denied the use of the words and pleaded privilege. The case is proceeding.
