AMERICAN MONEY FOR THE GERMAN WAR LOAN. Times and Sydney Sun Service. (Received 8.0 a.m.) New York, March 17. It is estimated that ten millions sterling have been subscribed to the German war loan in America. THE BLOCKADE OF GERMANY IRRITATES U.S.A. United Press Association. Washington, March 17. President Wilson announces that an immediate and vigorous protest will be made against the British decision to place an embargo on German trade. The State Department does not conceal its keen disappointment at the failure of its efforts to secure a modus viveudi between Britain and Germany on the basis of Germany’s offer to give up submarine warfare against merchantmen. The futility of further protest is admitted unless retaliation is threatened. BERNSTORFF WANTS AN INQUIRY INTO DRESDEN’S LOSS. Washington, Marcji 17. Count von Bernstorff officially notified the American Government that British warships sank the Dresden within neutral waters, and asks that an investigation be made.
