The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 1915. FARMERS' FREEZING WORKS.

Complaints continue to roach us from farmers who are unable to get their stock into the existing freezing works, and it does certainly appear that the time is now ripe for an earnest effort to be made to carry out some such scheme as proposed recently to provide farmers' co-operative freezing works for Taranaki. We are informed that many of those settlers who were 1 lukewarm about the project at the commencement, are now feeling the pinch themselves, and will be staunch supporters of a movement in this direction. At Kohuratahi last Wednesday an enthusiastic meeting of settlers re-, solved that it was of first importance that the erection of freezing works should be at once vigorously taken in' hand, and it was further decided that the undertaking be restricted to bona' fide settlers only. Whether this latter provision is entirely wise remains to be seen. It has to be remembered that' the movement started after a very' representative meeting held in Stratford some months ago has by no means been abandoned, and wo are sure that those who promoted that meeting and have since given a good deal of time to the matter, will bo very willing to fall in with the promoters of the Kohuratahi meeting in carrying to a successful issue any sound workable scheme

which will provide the works. There is a growing conviction amongst settlers that more facilities for meat freezing arc urgently required in the district. 1 Farmers' freezing companies in other parts of the Dominion are running successfully and with marked advan- ( tage to the settlers themselves. No] good reason has been adduced why such, an undertaking should not be a success| in Taranaki. If an up-to-date freezing works is built by the settlers in the proper locality, under good man-j agement, the venture is fully warrant-, ed. Farmers have the matter very, much in their own hands, however, and must take it up seriously if anything is to he done. It is proposed to call, meetings in various centres to discuss, the question, and probably before long' the gentlemen appointed to obtain information regarding the best position for a site and cost of installation, will he in a position to report, and with this available some definite steps may speedily be looked for.
