EXPLOITATION PROTEST.

The Tiniiirii branch of tho Loeomotivc F.nginedrivers, Firemen, ami Cleaners’ Association passed a resolution calling the attention of the Government to the unreasonable charges that are being made for the necessaries of life, and expressing the opinion that the present crisis was being used by millers and merchants lor their private enrichment. The resolution also deplores the inactivity of the Government in allowing such exploitation to take place, and calls upon the Government to fix maximum prices for all common necessaries ol life.
ALLEGED CARD-SHARPING.
Napier, March 0. At the Supreme Court to-day four men, Patrick Lynch, Leslie Short, \ ictor Puller, and Oliver charged with conspiring to defraud a Moari of about X'SO while playing “nap” and “poker,” when travelling between Wellington aid Napier, were acquitted on each count and discharged.
A Christchurch telegram says; In receiving the reports and balancesheets of the various mission properties vested in the Methodist Church, an unique and interesting item of income appears in the Crey Institute balancesheet, New Plymouth, viz., XlO Us 111(1 royalty on oil. The famous Taranaki oil wells are situated on. this missionary property, and for the first time royalties have been paid.
