Greece

POPULAR POLITICIANS AND DIP-

LOMATS.

London, March 8

An Athens correspondent reports that the British, Russian and Belgian Ministers, when leaving the French Legation, were given an ovation, the British Ambassador being carried

shoulder-high in front of the German Legation.

Athens, March 8

The King presided at a Crown Council. M. Venizelos emphasised the danger of an Austro-German descent on the Balkans. Neither Austria nor Germany had offered to respect Greece’s interests, while the Allies had. The King, nevertheless, favored neutrality.

Later, M. Venizelos explained the position to the Chamber. Four-fifths of tho members of all parties assured him of their confidence in him. M. Venizelos was given popular ovations iu the streets, where huge crowds demonstrated in favor of war.

Paris, March 8.

The Petit Parisenne says that Greece aspires to Smyrna, which will probably be given her if she joints the Entente.

A majority of the newspapers consider the crisis merely delays Greece’s entry into the war.

IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION URGED. FAVORABLE TO THE ENTENTE. United Press Association. (Received 8.45 a.m.) London, March 8. Reuter’s states that the Greek Crown Council with two dissentients favored immediate intervention on the side of the Entente. Greeks in London and abroad favour intervention; and believe ex-Premier Venizelos will soon return to enforce his policy.
