A LYTTELTON SENSATEON.

Quite a soiiuatinn was caused at Lyttelton on Saturday when it was learned that a warrant had been issued for the arrest of a well-known athlete and ex-employee of the Lyttelton Borough Council on an alleged charge of theft from the corporation's funds. It is understood that the person implicated in the charge recently joined the reinforcements. The amount of the defalcations is believed to be between £6OO and £7OO.

DOMINION FINANCE.

Dttnedin, March 7

Hon. Jas. Allen, Minister of Finance, has received a statement of revenue for the eleven months ended February 28th, also the figures for the eleven months of the previous year. Compared with the previous year the figures are: Customs £2,50",710 (a decrease of £210.766); stamps, £1,074,566 (a decrease of £30,667; postal and telegraph, £1,014,974 (an increase, of £52,881); land tax,. £781,178 (an increase of £30,020; income tax, £514,954 (an increase of £4794), beer tax, £114.735 (an increase of £2647); railways, £3,566,900 (an increase of £90,716); registration, etc., £82,110 (an increase of £630); marine, £44,753 (a decrease of £2210) ; miscellaneous. £352,492 (an increase of £44,. oosi ; territorial, £2Ol ,sfti lan increase of £49,320); national endowment, £78,770 (an increase of £6368); other receipts, £1758 (a decrease of £538). Total increases, £281,511; total decreases, £241.212, leaving an excess of £37,329 over the amount received- in 1914. The total revenue this year was £10,719,284, and last year £10,681,955.

The Minister states that the decrease in Customs revenue was due to the war, and £174,000 of it happened in January and February. He also expects a decrease this month. He thinks that some of the falling-off in stamp revenue will be made up this month. The increase in railway revenue will be made up this month. The increase in railway revenue was very much less than had been expected. During February the decrease was £-11,109, as compared with February of last year. Tlia revenue might, however, recover to some extent in March.
