Carmichael has resigned his portfolio, for reasons that are understood to be purely personal. No ques. tion affecting the policy of the party or the Government is involved.. Mr Holman stated that the resignation cpme as a great surprise. Cabinet had failed to persuade Mr Carmichael that the situation did not justify the retirement. Air Carmichael refuses to make a statement. NOT SERIOUS DIFFERENCE. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, March 6. Mr Holman (Premier), in an interview, said there had been differences of opinion recently, and these had been discussed between him and Air Carmichael, but they were only most trifling matters. They were nothing iike as serious as other differences which had been surmounted. There was not the slightest difference as regards the policy, public finance, party management, admmistratibn, or any matter of public concern. N.S.W. HORSES, CATTLE, SHEEP. The number of horses in New South Wales on Ist January was 588,201, being a decrease of 27,249; of cattle there were 2,231,973, being a decrease of 191,670; sheep 34,726,269, being a decrease of 3,273,273 compared to 1913. 'l’bo decrease in horses is attributed to the great demand for military purposes, while in cattle and sheep the drought. and high prices obtainable are held to be responsible. STATE ABATTOIRS. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, March G. When the new abattoirs are ready in three weeks’ time, the Government will undertake the killing of stock for Imperial requirements. , THE PRICE OF DRINKS. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Sydney, March 6. The Licensed Victuallers’ Association lias sanctioned members .reverting to the old scale of charges for drinks. MANGANESE MINE RE-OPENED. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, March 6. The cutting off of manganese supplies from Germany has led to the reopening of the closed mine at Lithgow. "THIRD DECREE” CONDEMNED. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Sydney, March 6. Judge Docker, at the Quarter Sessions, vigorously condemned submitting prisoners to the "third degree,” which he characterised as nothing less than torture. English judges have always set their faces against the practice. SMALLPOX ON STEAMER. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Alelbourne, March 6. The steamer Gregory Apacr from Calcutta has a Lascar steward aboard suffering from smallpox, and the vessel has been quarantined.
