MUTTON FOR THE AUTHORITIES.

The first shipment of meat for Imperial purposes consisted of 43,000 carcases of mutton. The Board of National Relief donated £IOOO each .to the Belgian and Servian funds.

Merchants predict a scarcity of safety matches owing to the war. Stocks are low, wholesale prices already having advanced 133 per cent., and the people are warned against waste. A hospital ship has "arrived from Egypt conveying a large number of troops suffering from certain diseases, also many who,were discharged for insubordination, i MEAT SHIPS FOR ENGLAND. Sydney, March 4. Mr Flowers states that negotiations are proceeding! with the Federal Government to secure' several idle steamer Ito convey meat to England. If the Meat Board succeeds in obtaining the loan of the ships, it will possibly despatch 150,000 carcases within the next few days. The board is also enquiring whether any prize ships are available.
