FAKED "TOTE" TICKETS.

DISCUSSION'S DIVIDEND AT DANNEVIRKE. INCIDENT AT THE PAY-OUT WINDOW. HURRIED FLIGHT OF THE FORCERS. Peb Pbess Association. Dannevirke, March 5. A daring attempt was made at the Dannevirke Races yesterday to present faked tote tickets. The proprietors of the tote, Messrs Marrett and Fox, at the Woodville races in February, were taken down for'kbout £'2oo by means of faked tickets, and guided by this and by the fact that similar operations had taken place at Wanganui a few days ago, they instructed all clerks to keep careful" watch on all tickets presented, and to watch for a certain distinguishing mark on the face of the ticket. On the first day nothing untoward occurred, hut yesterday, however, after the second race a person appeared at the pay-out window and presented two £1 tickets on Discussion, which paid "over a fiver." The clerk who received it became suspicious and called one of the proprietors. The man, glancing through the window, saw that his game was up and bolted, accompanied by a confederate carrying a handbag, which, presumably, ■ contained their printing paraphernalia. They got into a taxicab and drove rapidly in the direction of Dannevirke, but they got out before reaching town and made tracks for the back country, not having been seen since. The annoying part, of the matter is that arrangements had been made for continual surveillance of the windows, and when the services of the watcher were requisitioned he was away at dinner ; otherwise a red-hand-ed capture would have been effected.
