THE BELGIAN APPEAL.
GOVERNMENT ACtION IN NEW SOUTH WALES. PROPOSED £30,000 PER MONTH. United Peess Association. (Received 9.12 a.m.) Sydney, March 2. At Thursday’s town hall meeting,. Mr Holman (Premier) will .submit a definite scheme for systematically assisting the Belgians. It will suggest contributions being given ■until t-he close of .the present year or till the end of the wart Mr Holman thinks that if an effort worthy of the State is made there will be no difficulty in raising .30,000 mqpth f :privately, which the Government would supple- 1 ment at the rate of ten shillings in the £. This would leave the other States to raise £45,000 monthly. A member of the Million Club in* tends to suggest to the meeting that the Government permit the organisation of a, huge lottery.

The New South Wales quota for a new contingent; is all, ready. More are ready and will also be prepared for necessary. reinforcements two months ahead. The enlistments since the, beginning of the year number over 8000.

The High Court has commenced the hearing of the appeal in connection with the. validity *of the New South Wales’ Wheat Acquisition Act. Tire Royal Commission to enquire into the. alleged competition in connection. with the Wheat Acquisition Act has opened.
Mr Hall (Minister of Agriculture), comparing the New South Wales oosition with Victoria, claims that the G- vernment’s action ou t'sing the price of wheat has given farmers more for their grain than they hav& received for many a year, and that it has given people a comparatively cheap loaf and saved, the country over a million and a quarter annually. He points oax. that the only persons henefitting in Victoria are the speculators.

GERMAN SAILORMEN INTERNED.

In accordance with instructions from the~lmperial authorities, the officers and engineers of the various German vessels seized in 'Australian waters have been internod. rtp seizure of the vessels, these men have been on parole with an allowance of £1 weekly, but yesterday all of them, totalling forty-five, were placed under military guard in barracks.
