Mr C. E. Adams, New Zealand Government Astronomer, who is in residence at the Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, California, for a year, has had conferred upon him the degree of 1 Doctor of Science.

Mr E. Dobbie, stationmaster at Dunedin, has been nominated as representative of the first division of the Railway Appeal Board, a vacancy having been created by Mr W. O.'Ennis having gone to the war. The result of the voting should be known about the mid. die of next month.

Archdeacon Calder, who has been forty years in Auckland, and who for fifteen eyars occupied the dual position of vicar of All Saints and Archdeacon of the diocese, has resigned the latter position, in older to devote himself more closely to his* parochial duties.

-Mr Joseph I. Brittain, who has been Consul-General for the United States in New Zealand, with headquarters at Auckland for some months, has received notification from Washington of his appointment as Consul-General at Sydney in succession to Mr John T. Bray. Mr Brittain will probably be leaving to assume his new duties in the course of a few weeks . The name of a succesosr in the New Zealand Consulate has not yet been intimated by the American authorities.

Miss Chrissie Lau, wno finished her pupil teachership in the Stratford School last December, and who is now assistant mistress at Tuna School, has been notified from London that she has gained a University Certificate of Proficiency in Latin. Miss Lau gain, ed a similar certificate in mathematics last year. These results show that Miss Lau’s qualifications are of a very high order, and reflect the greatest credit both on herself and on the school in which she was trained.

The death is announced of Mr Frank T. Bullen, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and well known author and lecturer. Born at Paddington, London, on sth April, 1857, a sou of Mr F, E. Bullen, of Crewkerne, Dorsetshire, he married in 1878 Miss Amelia Grimwood. He had no education after 1866, but prior to this was at Dame School and West bourne School, Paddington. From 1860 he was a London errand boy until 1809, w\ien he adopted a seafaring life in various capacities (up to and including chief mate) in all parts of the world, until in 1883, when he returned to London and accepted a clerkship in the meteorological office until 1899. His publications include “The Cruise of the Cachalot,” “Idylls of the Sea,” “The Leg of a Sea Waif,” “The Men of the Merchant Service,” “With Christ at Sea,” “A Sack of Shakings,” “The Apostles of the South East,” “Deep Sea Plunderings,” “A Whaleman’s Wife,” besides many stories, articles and essays. He was a member of the Authors’ Club in London, and resided for some years at the little village of Melbourne in Cambridgeshire. England.
