THE DIVINE SARAH.

FAMOUS ACTRESS’S RIGHT LEG

AMPUTATED.

[By Eleoteio Telegraph—Copybight] United Pbebs Association. Paris, February 22. Sarah Bernhardt’s right leg has been amputated. The patient is as well as can be expected.

There is something really tragic in the news that Madame Sarah Bernhardt has had one of her legs amputated. Early in 1914 the Divine Sarah set out on a world’s tour of farewell, which was to have included New Zealand and Australia. The first section of the tour proceeded through Europe, and while she was on it her knee was hurt. It was then announced that the tour would be abandoned, and that the great actress would retire. Later, however, she went on the road again, but the knee went out once more, and it was practically accepted that her active career was finished. The retirement of Bernhardt removes the greatest actress of the age from active work, and will take away one of France’s idols.
