DEATH IN A TRAIN.
MR ROYD CARLICK’S SUDDEN END. Per Press Association. Christchurch, February 21. Mr Koyd Garlick, director of physical Culture to the Education Department, died on the West Coast train on Saturday afternoon. Mr Garlick passed through Christchurch on Thursday morning on his way from Wellington to the West Coast. He had been twice in Christchurch shortly before inspecting the teachers’ physical training camp, and was proceeding to inspect the West Coast teachers’ camp at Greymouth. He was accompanied by Mrs Garlick and Mr Herbert Langworth, one of his staff instructors.
After inspection of the camps yesterday, the party- were returning from Ci rev mouth. On leaving the train at Otira, Mr Garlick decided to walk over the big hill, and ho did so. arriving at Healey Flat in a profpsc per. spiration, and complained of pain in his chest. There was no medical man in the train, hut both Mrs Garlick and Mr Langworth arc experts in ambulance work, as was Mr Garlick himself. and there was also a member of the Territorial A.M.C., and they did what was possible. Mr Garlick, however, grew worse, and in spitp of stimulants administered, nnssed away. When the train which had left Arthur’s Pass at 2.15 p.m., was at about the StaiVcase at Garfield, T)r. J. H. Simpson was secured, and examined the body. He was only able to make a. general examination- while the train was at the station, but he pronounced life to be extinct.
An inquest was held to-day. Medical ■evidence was given that the hotly was that of a thin, spare man, and the heart was small. The tHcuspid valve
was thickened, and there Avas aortic atheroma in the early stage. Death Avas due to cardiac hernia, consequent on deceased’s previous exertion. Deceased practically had incipient heart disease.
Dr. Sanclstein stated that deceased must have been failing in health for some time. He had no special muscular development.
A verdict Avas returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
