A RUSSIAN “MUTE.”
INTERESTING MENTAL PHENOMENON. Per Fresh Association, Wellington, February 18. For some weeks a mysterious foreigner has baffled the Wellington pol- j ice. He is a Russian, named Ludmit Gromica, sent here by the Grey mouth
Charitable Aid Board, and now charged with being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient means of support. He has been’ several times demanded. He refuses to speak to anybody. When charged, he fook no notice, and the Magistrate sentenced him to three months. This was interpreted to Gromica, who continued to smile calmly, as he had done throughout the proceedings. Doctors say he is not insane. They are also convinced that he understands English,as he does everything he is told in that language to do.
