For some time the Government Statistician has been engaged in compiling an index number to show with a fair degree of accuracy the variations in the cost of living. So far as the figures have been taken, they reveal an increase in the cost of living for xhe last December quarter of roughly G* per cent, for the whole Dominion, apparently caused by the war. The enquiry as it. concerns the four chief centres has been carried as far back as 1891. No official figures have yet been made available, but it is known that considerable increases have occurred, the chief item being house rent, which, taking 1000 as the standard number, lias jumped from 800 to over 1230. In the period under review meat lias incieased about fifty per cent.
