The Stratford School was closed this afternoon at 2 o’clock, so that the teachers might attend the funeral of the lute J. A. Thomas. Mr Joseph Thomas, first assistant master of the school, is a younger brother of the deceased and the sympathy of the whole School is with him in his affliction.

The following appointments have been made to the Expeditionary Force now in Egypt:—Major Hughes, camp commandant; Major Shawe, 3rd grade General Staff officer ; Captain Moore, in command of the Otago Infantry Battalion, is granted the temporary rank of Lieut.-Colonel, and Captain Reid has been granted the temporary rank of Major.

Mr 1). R. Fisher, who for the past four years has been engineer, and linotype expert on the staff of the “Stratford Evening Post,” and who has resigned to take a similar position on the “Lyttelton Times,” was yesterday the recipient of a presentation from his fellow workers, as a mark of the esteem in which he is held. The Manager, in making the presentation spoke in the highest terms of Mr Fisher’s many good qualities and heartily wished him success in his new sphere.

Councillor Smith moved at the meeting of the Stratford County Council this morning that the Council express its sympathy with Mr Joseph Thomas, of Ngaere (an ex-member of the Council), and his family, and, also the widow and children in their recent loss. The motion was seconded by Cr Christoffel. The Chairman (Mr Hathaway) said that during the time the late MrThomas was teacher at the Tuna School he was a most popular and competent teacher. He considered that the Education Department had lost one of their most sociable and competent workers. The motion was carried. and it was resolved that the Chairman and Cr. Smith represent the Council at the funeral.
