THE PROFESSOR'S PROGRAMME.
In the light of the floods of venom against England which Germans of all ranks now pour forth, one almost wonders that Germany never thought of the possible wisdom of tackling Engtain first and by herself. At the end of December the “Corriere della Sera” published the text of Professor Ernest Haeckel’s “view” of the most desirable results that might be obtained from the war. The text ignis as follows i “In my opinion the most desirable results of victory for the future of Germany and of confederate Europe are as follows: —In the first place the crushing of the English tyranny; in the second place the invasion of Great Britain and the occupation of London ; in the third plai?e the division of Belgium. The greater part of Belgium from Antwerp to Ostende must be federated to the German State; the northern part should bo given to Holland. The south-eastern part should be assigned to Luxemburg, which, thus, increased, should become also a State of the German Confederacy. In the fourth place, a great part of the British Colonies and of the Congo Free State should belong to Germany. France should cede to Germany a pait of the provinces on her north-eastern frontier. In the fifth place, Russia should be rendered impotent by the reconstitution under the auspices of Austria of the Kingdom of Poland. In the sixth place the German provinces of the Baltic littoral should bo restored to Germany; and finally Finland, united with Sweden, should become an independent kingdom.” What a nice kindly old sort this man of “kultur” must be, and how very modest in his wishes!
