The Rev. Mr Long, of the Melanesian Mission at Norfolk Island, was drowned while endeavoring to save two boys, states a Sydney cablegram.
Messrs J. B. Mine (M.P. for Stratford), and Mr W. T. Jennings (M.P. for Taumarauui) were present at the complimentary dinner to the Ohura visitors in the Foresters’ Hall last night.
Major J. G. Hughes, military secretary to General Godley, commanding the New Zealand expeditionary force, has been rather seriously ill since the force left New Zealand, and had to undergo an operation in Egypt, he is now making fair progress.
As a slight token of their appreciation of the good time they received on their recent visit to New Plymouth, tire Ohura settlers presented the president of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr J. Patou) with a gold signet ring on which is engraved the word “Ohura.”
The death of Mr Caleb Davies, aged eighty-seven years, a pioneer of the Marlborough building trade, and a very old identity is reported from Blenheim. Mr Davies had been a resident of Blenheim since 1858, and had built most of the earlier residences in the town.
Mr Harper M, Lepper, of Taranaki, has joined G Company at the Rjval Military College at Sandhurst.
The name of Colonel R. Williams, M.P., father of Mrs Wallis, wife of Bishop Wallis, late of Wellington, appears in the New Year Honors List. He has had a baronetcy conferred uiion him.
