There is fine weather, with a great attendance for the first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club races. . The course is in good order. Results:—
Waitara Hurdles, of 125sqvs., one and a-half miles.—Merry Guy 1, Styrax 2, Ascalon 3. Scratched: Warea, Wee Paul, Nita, Millbanks, White Plume. Won by half a length, third horse close up. Time, 2miu 47 2-ssec. . .
Stewards’ Handicap, of ISOsovs., five furlongs.—Simple Sam 1, Master Achillies, 2, Play Off 3. Scratched : Tree Lucerne, Tyson, Flying Queen. Won by a length, a neck between second and third. Time,o2secs. Timaru Hack, of lOOsovs., six furlongs.—Combustion 1, Sylvan Dale 2, Avon Park 3. Also started:, King Chiara, Bay Paul. Wtm by one and a half lengths, third hox-se a neck away. Time, limn IGsec.
Taranaki Cup, of 500 sovs; one and a-quaiyter miles..—Phosphorus 1,. Goldsize 2, Court. Martial 3. Also started; Emperadpr, Byron, Ladify, Phosphorus was runnjug last the first time past the, stand, but led , into the straight. Empe.rador was shut in on the rails. Won by a length, a neck between second-and third, lime 2rain 11 sec.
