From tire Superintendent of the National Provident Fund, asking the Council for particulars of names, ages, etc., of the Council’s employees so that he might quote terms to the Council in connection with the fund. -The matter is in the clerk’s hands. THE ' LONG PADDOCK.” Cr King brought up the matter of the ‘oiig grass on some of the footpaths. His opinion was that a small mower—a horse machine—would do a tremendous amount of work in this direction. Councillors; You could not do it; the ground is too rough. Cr. King, proceeding, said he would,' leave it to the engineer to say whether it would not bo a cheaper plan than the cutting being done by the Council’s workmen. He believed it would be the means of saving money for the Council. “it avow Id be very much cheaper.” said the . Engineer. Cr, Morison: It is not practicable. It could not .be done by a machine. Hie ground is.too uneven. Cr. Boon said he was quite satisfied that if the horse was walked on the gravel the machine would do the work. Cr. Reader, speaking as one who knew a little about mowers, said tbe mower was not made which would do tbe job. The outside wheel on the machine would prevent it. Cr. Richards said there was a good chance of the scheme working. There was no need for a wheel, as the best work « ■ drum by a shoe. They would not mow inside the footpaths, but inside the watertahles.
Agreed that the matter be left to the Works Committee to report.
