ROAD TO THE MOUNTAIN.

FINANCIAL SCHEME MATERIALISES. BOROUGH' COUNCIL VOTES £25. At lust night’s meeting ol the Borough Council, a letter was read iroiu the secretary ol' the Stratford Mountain Club (Mr T. Kirkwood) requesting a grant from the Council for metalling Pembroke Road, on the condition that the sum of £260 in addition to the Government’s grant is forthcoming.

Cr. Richards moved that the sum of £2.1 be voted for expenditure on Pembroke Road west of Barkly Road, on condition that the sum of £2.10, in addition to the Government grant, be forthcoming. It was hardly necessary, said Cr. Richards, to go into the pros, and cons, of the matter, but for the benefit of those councillors who did not quite understand the position he explained that the people interested in the land which would benefit by the metal being put on the road had* agreed to apply for a Government loan under the Local Bodies Loans .Act of £IOO. The County Council, as they knew, were willing to give £B3 6s Bd, and with the £IOO mentioned, the sum left to be raised was £66 13s 4d. Personally, Cr. Richards said, he was confident that sum would be forthcoming. The benefits from the work were so apparent that he did not propose to go into them.

Cr. Fredric, in seconding the motion. said everybody would benefit to some extent, and the Council should try and help as much as they could, and prevent the loan from lapsing. Cr. Boon supported the motion, it being distinctly understood, of course, that the other monies were raised.

Cr. King, on being assured by His Worship that the Council was in order in granting £25. which would be paid out of unauthorised expenditure, said that he had his own opinions as to the benefits to be derived; but he would not oppose the motion. Is the other money to be raised by subscription ? Cr. Richards : Yes.

Cr, King: Then, the £25 is given on condition that the £O6 16s Id is collected and the £IOO for the loan is also forthcoming, and if not, that we do not give the £25? Cr. Richards: That is my intention. I might say that the application for the £IOO loan is in the hands of the County Council. There is really £45 to raise outside the two Councils’ grants and the £IOO loan. I \ have absolutely no doubt about getting the matter through. The £25 will not bo paid if the other monies are not found.

Cr. . Morisot) said he -had pleasure in supporting the motion, , Cr. Masters said he had ,,‘‘up, there” recently, and he noticed that this end of the road was much worse than the top end. If the work was done, it would improve the road considerably. Personally, lie had no objection to the Council voting £25. On being put to the meeting, the motion was carried ncm. dis.
