VIOLENT FIGHTING UNABATED. United Press Association. (Received 8.-10 a.m.) Petrograd, February 4. A communique states : The battle in the Borjimoff district continues with Unabated violence. The fighting in the Carpathians is more intense, owing to German reinforcements. IN THE CARPATHIANS. London, February 4. The Daily Mail's Petrograd correspondent says that from twelve to fifteen Austro-German ■ Army Corps are engaged in the advance on the Carpathian front of eighty miles. The effort to relieve Przemysl and the five days' fighting in the Striji district resulted in very heavy Austrian losses. Petrograd, February 3. A communique states that the Germans, constantly harassed by the cavalry, have fallen hack on Lipno. The German attack northward of Borzimoff was repulsed with heavy losses. Their attempts southwards of the Pilica. were unsuccessful. We have advanced to a point in the Dukla Pass, almost in th,e interior, and traversed the principal height, capturing guns, howitzers, and many prisoners. We repelled an attack south east of the Uszok Pass, with enormous German losses, and annihilated the battalions south-east of the Beskid Pass. London, February 3. Petrograd reports that Russia has decided to regard the bombardment of unfortified towns as an act of piraqy. The crew of the Parseval which bombed Li ban has been informed that they will be treated and tried as common outlaws, in accordance with the Czar's explicit orders. Russia's decision is influenced by the fact that documents found on dead German officers in Poland show that the Kaiser ordered the troops to treat the Cossacks as robbers. Letters from Austrians in the Carpathians assert that the soldiers are dying from cold, and the wounded and sick falling a prey to th"> wolves and bears.
A Russian military expert says that despite the efforts of Germany it will find difficulty in passing through the critical summer months till the new harvest; in fact, time is on our side. Russian headquarters assert that the Austrians are fleeing the mountain passes held by the Russians, whose cavalry has penetrated the Hungarian plains. General Hindenberg is vainly endeavoring advance. London, February 4. Prisoners of war in Russia are:— German, 1476 officers and 173,824 men; Austrian, 3621 officers and 410,257 men. Over 50,000 Austrians were captured last week. Berlin papers announce that the Council of .Greater Britain has appointed 12,000 special constables to guard the bakers' shops, fearing trouble, due to the shortage of bread. A demonstration in Spain on the Kaiser's birthday was secretly engineered by the Germans. Numerous societies have been formed in recent years, ostensibly for the purpose of country excursions, but really are an integral part of an extensive military organisation. The excursionists are not only drilled, but they hvae secured plans of every district of strategic value. Paris, February 3. Le Matin declares that Simon Lake, an American, alleges that Germany's new submarines were "built by Krupps from bis designs. Krupps refused to pay for the plans, or to return them. Amsterdam, February 4. The Kolnisclie Zeitung violently attacks Mr Bryan for making himself the mouthpiece of the brutal British standpoint. It declares that American neutrality is a thin veil for concealing eagerness to do- England a, good turn, and that if America respects only brute force, we must give free play to brute force.
