A RAILWAY FATALITY.
THE FOREMANS RESPONS'IBILI* j TIES. Per Press .Association. Auckland, February 2. When on the top of a new railway signal post at Henderson on January 26tli, Jas. Porter, a railway carpenter, fell a distance of .‘SO foot and received injuries which resulted fatally. At the inquest to-day evidence showed that one of the guy ropes which held the derrick in position beside the post crossed the line of rails, but did not allow sufficient clearance and was cut by the top of a passing train. The derrick swung round and dislodged Porter, who fell. The Coroner pointed out that the responsibility fell upon the foreman, Harry Johnson, who had failed to observe the regulations, which provide that the guy rope shall allow a clearance for passing trains and that the stationniastcr In; warned of its presence. The coroner will give his verdict to-morrow.
