THE FIGHTING AT GIVENCHY. STRENUOUS WORK AT CLOSE QUARTERS. (Received 1.45 p.m.) London, January 31. •“Eye-witness” gives the following version of the Imctie at Givenchy on the 25th: The Germans attacked, north and south of the canal. Tie former fei’ce passed -the British trenches and gained a foothold at Givenchy, l at as they, -surged through- the village the British met them with cold steel, killing hundreds. Fighting at lose f;natters continued for several hours, until the British re-occupied tin- original tranches. The German losses w. e very heavy, several scattered parties penetrating the British lines and being practically annihilated. The British casualties were light. Meanwhile, on the south of the canal a fierce struggle raged the whole day long. British machine guns swept the Germans, who were advancing along the main road, and German dead littered the ground. Another force advancing along the railway suffered heavily from machine guns, but penetrated the British lines.
