GENERAL BATTLE PENDING RUSSIAN PROGRESS REPORT. United Perm Association. (Received 8.50 a.m.) Petrograd, January 31. A communique says: “We drove back the Germans at Lebegalen, north of Gumbinnen. The Germans were repulsed in the Borjimoff region, suffering great losses. A general battle is developing between Dukla and Wyszkow. We are progressing at several points, having carried three lines of trenches south-west of Dukla. A Russian column crossed the mountain crest in a snowstorm at Sary Kamish. On Wednesday we occupied Gorness, and after heavy fighting captured the commander and staff of sixteen officers, and three guns and stores. Turks who attacked the column on Thursday were thrown hack with heavy losses.
A RUSSIAN REPORT. Petrograd, January 30. Official: Fighting continues in the forest northward of Pilkallen and Gumbinnen. German attacks in the Borjimog district were repulsed with heavy loss. Progress at Dukla was maintained, despite desperate Austrian resistance, except at the Meskid Pass, .where the Russian advance guard fell back. ’ The Russians during the past three days have captured in this region 60 officers, 2400 soldiers, there guns, and 'ten machine guns. AUSTRIANS CLAIM SUCCESS. Vienna, January 31. Official: The result of the week’s vigorous battles in the Carpathians was that we reconquered the passes, despite the snow and difficulties of the ground. We took prisoners 10,000 Russians.
FAMINE CONDITIONS IN LOD^. Copenhagen, January 31. A refugee from Lodz states that the Germans confiscated enormous supplies of provisions; that there was no bread or potatoes to he had, and that the civilians were 011“ the point of starvation, eating cats and dogs.
