BIRTHDAY EFFORT FAILS. GERMANS REPULSED ON THE WHOLE FRONT. BRITISH LOSSES HEAVY. [United Prebi« Association.] (Received 9.20 a.m.) Paris, January 28. A communique states: The total German losses on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday exceed 20,000. The enemy made a great effort on the Kaiser's Birthday, but it was a good day for us on the whole l'ront. All attacks were repulsed and all our attacks progressed. Our artillery demolished several trenches, and the Belgian and English artillery swept the German routes at the points of concentration south of Lys. The Germans lost a brigade ou Monday and Tuesday in the Craonne region. Our losses were 800, including two companies which were imprisoned by a landslide. We now hold all the disputed ground and gained 400 metres north of Srones. FIGHTING FOR THE TRENCHES. Paris, January 28. Official: The enemy blew up fifty metres of trenches in the Tracy le Yal district, but were unable to seize them owing to artillery fire. We reoccupied and re-constructed them, and our counter-attacks recovered most of the lost ground. Westward of Craonne, where a land-slide had cut off two of our companies, the ardor of the troops was beyond all praise. The enemy abandoned a thousand corpses and prisoners belonging to four different regiments.
