Discussing the statements regarding the behaviour of the Australasian troops in Egypt, Mr Pearce (Minister of Defence) stated that a weeding-out process wes inevitable, and the un'desirables would be sent home. Mr Pearce added that one of the reasons that the troops were sent to 'Egypt was to undergo a period of 'training and to allow of a tryiag-oufc ito eliminate the undesirable element !before they arrived on the battlefield. 'lt was regrettable that a few inruly spirits had got into a. force, and every precaution Avas being taken agaiust such, a repetition. He was confident I the bulk of the force would do Australia credit. J Regarding the suggestion that the men were receiving a superfluous •amount of cash, Mr Pearce said the Defence Department was paying the same rate as the British soldiers, and the remainder was being deferred or allocated to the men's families.
THE WHEAT "CRAB." (Received 9.0 a.m.) Sydney, January 25. Referring to the wheat seizure, Mr Ashford states that in no single instance had there been any evidence of the intention of farmers to defeat the desires of the State Government. The Commission had made no alteration in the price, and the sum remains at £2l per ton. The wholesale price of biscuits has increased one farthing per lb. BREAD IN MELBOURNE. (Received 9.0 a.m.) Melbourne, January 25. The price of the 21b loaf has been increased to 4sd, and in the suburbs to sd. BRISBANE BREAD. (Received 9.50 a.m.) Brisbane, January 25.
The master bakers have resolved to increase the price of bread id per loaf from February Ist, subject to the approval of the Control Board. THE WEST AUSTRALIAN WAY. Perth, January 25. The Board has fixed the price of wheat at 7s 4d per bushel, and notifies that it intends purchasing all the wheat in Western Australia. MAIZE FOR THE ARGENTINE. K (Recieved 9.0 a.m.) Perth, January 25. The Government has purchased six thousand tons of Argentine maize to meet fodder requirements.
