OUR HIGH COMMISSIONER. REPORT ON HIS TRIP TO EGYPT and France; United Peess iAssooiatxon. (Received 9.0 a.m.)* London, January 22. The Hon. Thomas Mackenzie (New Zealand High Commissioner) has returned from Egypt, He reports that excellent arrangements had ben made for the New Zealand troops and that they left no room for criticism. He had several interviews with the Sultan, who was interested in New Zealand measures for assisting fanners. Mr Mackenzie also conferred with the British Chamber of Commerce in Paris on trade matters, and visited the Soissons region, and investigated the evidences of German “kultur.” HAND-TO-HAND IN ALSACE (Received 9.15 a.m.) Paris, January 22.
A communique states; The enemy bombarded Nieuport with considerable violence. We slightly progressed eastward of the Lombaertzyde causeway. Our artillery was effective between Ypros and the Oise against the earthworks and batteries of the enemy. Wo re-took portion of the trenches at Bois le Pretre. We captured on Wednesday the German batteries at Schluchto and silenced thqra. An extremely fierce infantry engagement , and hand-to-hand struggle is being waged at Hurtmann and Sweilerkoff in Alsace. CONGESTION IN THE DOCKS. (Received 9.15 a.m.) London, January 22. The Manchester Guardian says the Board of Trade enquiry into the increased freights tends to show that the main cause is the congestion at the docks rather than shortage of ships. One million tons of shipping are lying idle all round the coast. It is hoped the increased pay and overtime will attract additional labor to the docks.
