H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA SINKS CER. MAN LINER. United Press Association. (Received 10.40 a.m.) Melbourne, January 23. Official information received from Rear-Admiral Patey states that on January 6th 5 H.M.A.S. Australia captured and sank a German liner which was acting as a supply ship to the German cruisers, the officers and crew being taken prisoners. The Australia’s crew are all well. The Chairman of the Port of London Authority stated that owing to the activity of the Emden and other enemy vessels accumulating shipping and over-taxing accommodation, nearly twenty Australasian vessels have arrived, the influx of shipping being the biggest since London became a port.
