CARPENTERS’ STRIKE SPREADS OVER THE DOCKYARDS. (Received 9.10 a.m.) Melbourne, January 19. Six hundred carpenters at the State lockvards have struck. Their gnevuice is that two eight-hour shifts are icing worked daily instead of the isual day. eight-to-five, and they claim overtime rates before eight o’clock and after five. Mr Greenlees, 'nival architect, refused the men’s, demands, and stated that the men •triking would not he taken on again. A. mass meeting of unionists was held uni the unionists numbering 1000 at the State dockyard were called out. The State Government is taking'on tlu> unemployed. THE STRIKE PROBLEM. (Received 9.10 a.m.) Sydney, January 19. The new Industrial Bill to he in- • reduced early next session does not prohibit a strike, provided no strike occurs without full opportunity being given for reflection and deliberation.
