SUNDAY TRADING CASE.
DEFENDANT FINED FOR SELLING “SOFT” DRINKS. IPbe Frbbs Ajmooiation.l Dunedin, January 19. An interesting case in connection with the sale of soft drinks on Sunday was heard at the Police Court this morning, when a shopkeeper was chained with having kept open bis premises at St. Clair for the purpose of trading. When spoken to by the police the defendant alleged he was quite within his rights in keeping his shop open for the sale-of soft* drinks. 1* or •the prosecution, it was stated that the whole question was one of whether selling soft drinks constituted a work of necessity or not. There had been magisterial decisions on somewhat fsim'ilar cases, but these were conflicting. Tho Magistrate, after commenting upon the practice elsewhere, said defendant had been guilty of a breach of the law, and fined him £l. Defendant’s counsel said his client wished to got a, decision of the Supreme ■ Court, and leave to appeal was granted.
