DESTRUCTIVE BUSH FIRE.

HEAVY LOSSES IN ,THE PONCA- , BOA DISTRICT. SAWMILL AND BUILDINGS BURNED. Per Press 'Association. Pahiafcua, January 19.' Disastrous bush fires occurred in Pongaroa district, where a cyclonic gale has been raging. Gardiner and Yoeman’s sawmill was completely destroyed, also cottages, stables, .and, a big stock of timber. The estimated damage is £6OOO. Two bridges valued at £2OO each near Waione, in the Akitio County, were . destroyed also an unoccupied house on Davidson’s property and a building on Eansteg’s. The fire swept through Max Kayser’s orchard, and it is reported that G. W. Murray’s fine residence at Pakoyliai was burned. The road between Dannevirke •end Pongaroa was blocked for vehicular traffic and the mail coach was unable to get through. The destruction of the sawmill wdl make timber very dear for the Akitio Countv.

Many outbuildings and miles of fencing have gone and houses were/ endangered. Rain fell last night and the gale has abated.- ■
