BOY-COMPANION’S plucky attempt AT RESCUE. I i'EU PHEBB ASSOCIATION. Wellington, January 17. A drowning accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Hutt river, the victim being Philip Pearse, aged 20, whose parents reside at Trcntham. The deceased and a hoy companion named Archibald John Craig went to bathe in the river at Trentham at about 3.30 p.m., and after they had been in the water some time, Pears© got out of bis depth. Craig went to his assistance, but had to let Pearse go in order to save himself, After going to the shore toe lad returned to the stream to make another attempt to rescue his comrade. This time he secured Pearse, land brought him ashore, but the latter was apparently dead. Efforts at artificial respiration failed.
