THE TREATMENT OF REBELS. United Press (Association. Pretoria, January 16, The Government has ordered that those members of the Defence 1? orce who had unwillingly' become rebels be released, conditionally on being of good behaviour, but Parliament will decide the question of granting pardon, and the legal consequences of any wrongful action. The release applies to a large proportion of the force involved iu Maritz’s rebellion. The Court of Enquiry found that there was some palliation for those whom Maritz coerced. Deliberate rebels are to be courtmartiallcd.

The Governor of German East Africa reported that two British warships and twelve transports on November 2nd demanded the unconditional surrender of Tanga, They landed in the vicinity one European and four Imdiau regiments, totalling 8000. The defenders numbers 2000, and after three days’ battle the British were repulsed with severe losses, and retreated north.
