FIRE BRIGADE.

PRELIMINARY MEETING. The public meeting convened by his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. P. Kirkwood) to consider matters regarding the Fire Brigade Carnival was hold last night in ihe reading room at the Fire Station. Several analogies for non-attendance were received from prominent citizens. Tim Mayor, in the course of his introductory remarks, said the Brigade had £7O in hand from last year, but he suggested that great care should be taken that the expenses this year were not excessive. He personally would do all he could to help the Brigade, but regretted that owing to the pressure of Borough business he would be unable to fill the position of chairman of committees.

Tu the arrangement of details, the meeting decided to approach the A. and P. Society with regard to the use of the Show Grounds. As to the date on which the carnival was to be held, Mr G. K. Wilson pointed out that to hold the event in March would interfere with the A. and P. Gymkhana, and it was decided that the date be the 18th February.

The meeting decided that most of the events given last year should be included in this year’s programme. Fireman Bradley s n id that he could not see his way clear to accept the position of secretary.—lt was decided to ask the A. and P. Society to allow Mr S. Ward to fill the position.

Mr J. Mulvey was appointed chairman of committees.

; The following committees were airpointed. with power to add to their number: .Running and cycling events (Messrs A. C Wand and CarlilD ; Advertising, Holiday and Railway Arrangements, Messrs T. G. Grubb and G. Bradley; Motor-car and Cycle Events. Messrs H. W. Mndford. Don Cameron, and Geo. Hall; Guessing Competition. Side Shows, Stepping the Chain, Messrs Rowson and Brocklebank; Horse Events, Messrs Wilson and A. J.. Davey. The next meeting, in connection with the carnival will be held on Monday evening. A vote of thanks to the Mayor concluded the meeting.
