SUNDRY SPORTS.
CRICKET. WIN FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] Uniter Press Assooivi h«s Sydney, January 1-L New South Wales won by 15 runs. South Au'trulia in the second venture made 331 (Mayne 39, Wilsmore 15, Fellow 97, Rundoll 3G, Whitty 28, Stirling 44). AXEMEN’S EVENTS. Says the Auckland “Star” :—“Since the Northern Athletic Union took control of axemen’s events throughout Auckland province there has been a marked improvement in this branch of sport. Keen contests have taken place at Tauranga and To Aroha, but at the latter place the handicaps were heavy on the Pretty brothers. Both New Year chops were won by H. Parties, who started with 32 seconds in the 18in. block, and with 22 seconds in the loin. Judging from the press reports, the axemen’s events at Elthnm. where the Axemen’s Association controls the sport, have not been patronised too well this season. In the principal chopping event, for which £l3O is given in prize money, only 17 choppers took part. For a few years there has been some discontent in axe-
mon’s circles concerning Eltham control. and it lias been suggested on several public occasions that a King Countrv Axemen’s Association should bo formed. This may account somewhat for the fewness of competitors in the big chop.” '
