The southern portion of Italy has suffered greatly through earthquakes. Calabria has received s6nie terrible visitations, the most notable being those of 1783, in' which 60,000 lives were lost, in 1857 when 10,000 were killed, while the number killed in the Messina and • Calabria ' disaster of 1908 was 300,000. m
