QUESTION OF CONTRABAND. THE TRAIL OF THE DOLLAR. United Peebs Association. Washington, January 12. The State officials are disappointed with the' British Note, chiefly because Britain . refuses to give any general rule as to the method of dealing with alleged contraband. The American Government alleges that . scores of ships have been detained in British ports, hut efforts to obtain explanaI tious are alleged to have been fruitless. As to the large increase of i trade with certain European neutrals, it is pointed out that it is not proved (that Germany is receiving the benefits thereof, but simply the neutrals 1 themselves require the goods because the normal supply from Germany is
cut off. _ Mr Bryan and Sir C. A. Spring-Rice have refused to make any comment until the full statement of Britain’s position is forthcoming. THE WHEAT MARKET. Chicago, January 12. , The wheat market is panicky, owing to rumors of the probable reopening of the Dardanelles. May options are quoted" at 139$ to 133$ cents, and July 124| to 119| cents.
