STRATFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting ol the Stratford Borough Council was held last evening, when there wore present; His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. PKirkwood), Crs. N. J. King, J. Boon, J. Fredric, J. H. Thompson, J. B Richards, T Reader, J Masters, R. McK. Morison. THE NEW PREMISES. Mr J. I). Healy (the Council’s architect) was present and explained various details of the ground and upper storey plans to the Council, after winch the ground plan was approved. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Wesleyan Church Trustees re crossing to the Wesleyan Churci. property in Broadway. The Trustees resolved that the matter he defer ieo for a time for the reason that as they have arranged to lease a portion of the site, and this will necessitate removal of church to property in Regan Street, the crossing will have to be placed in a fresh position to suit tin lessees.—Received. From the Postmaster, in reply to letter of 16th from the Council n crossings at Stratford Post Office. Iron crossings will not he required, at other arrangements will be made by the Department.—Received.^
From the secretary of the Fire Bn gade re a dispute between the Brigade and. an ex-fireman re the return of his uniform, and it was decided to refei the matter to the Fire Brigade’s Committee.

Curtis, re borough workmen altering the level o gutter in Broadway. He warned the Council that if the levels are lowered. {'Charles S. Curtis will claim damages. Also (2) re outfall drain for shops in Broadway.—Received. Also (3) enclosing plan of lean-to shed (20 x 10), for J. Rivett, asking permission to erect shed.—Referred to Works Committee. | Renewal of applications for auctioneer's licenses were received from N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd., Newton King, and Webster, Dobson . and Co, also from T. Lamason. | REPORTS. ■ The Works Committee reported as follows :—An application has been received from Mr G. N. Curtis to be allowed I to erect a shed on section 319 without | a brick party wall. In view of the Council's decision not to allow any furthei buildings to be erected in the inner area without brick party walls your committee recommend that the application be refused.—Your committee recommend that one dozen wire rubbish baskets be procured to lie placed in Broadway Central.—Owing to the holidays, tenders have not yet been called for painting Victoria Bridge, and the ! estimate for proposed work on Ariel i Street north is not yet ready.—Adopti ed.
OVERSEER’S REPORT. T hog to report on the progress of works for the past month for your consideration. The kerbing and channelling on west side of Broadway between Fenton and Regan Streets has been completed. The necessary culi verts have been inserted at Fenton and Regan Streets to convey water from the newly laid channels at outlets. A concrete sump has been constructed over crossing in Regan Street at whore three water ways junction. Four 10ft and one sft cast iron crossings have been inserted in Broadway Central. A commencement has been made with the work of kerbing and channelling on east side of Broadway ' Central. Pembroke Road from Broadway to racecourse gate has been scan, fied and repaired and rolled. Broaway North at its junction with Pembroke Road has been repaired. The work of lowering the bank fronting Messrs Dywor and Smith’s properties will be completed by noon to-morrow. The footpaths in old cemetery have been cleaned off and grass cut on edges. Grass has been removed from Victoria and Swansea. Road bridges as authorised. I have prepared plans and specifications for building stables, pound sheds and pound yards, tenders for which will be before you on Monday next. I have to report that Mr J. Fredric has contravened By-law 30 of i the drainage by-laws by laying a new drain and connecting it to an existing drain without first obtaining a permit to do so.—Adopted. Councillor King moved that McMillan and Fredric be informed they must in future observe Section 8 of the drainage by-laws.—Seconded by Cr. Reader.—Carried. ABATTOIR MANAGER’S REPORT, The manager (Mr A. M. Spilman) reported as follows: —I have the honor to submit my report on the working of the abattoir during the month of December, 1914. The following stock were slaughtered .-—Cows, 53; heifers. 20; oxen, 13; calves, 4; sheep, 263; lambs, 216; pigs, 31; tripes prepared, 27. A now tank stand has been erected at the house as the old one was very much decayed. Other small necessary repairs to yards, etc., have been donej The large stumps in No. 1. paddock are' being blown out as time permits. Slaughtering fees £6O 5s 3d.—Adopted. BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Borough Inspector reported that I from Ist to 31st December he impounded 12 head of cattle. One person was convicted for riding a motor bicycle on the footpath and ten street lights* were put in. I TENDERS. ! J, Martin’s tender lor the erection of
stables and pound for £3B was accepted . UENKKAL. Cr. Kino; referred to the state of Cloton Hoad, which was getting worse, ho said. Hosolved on the motion of His Worship the Mayor that tenders he called for the rental of certain Municipal reserves, the leases of which were falling in. Cr. King drew attention to the state, of some of the hack streets, where the grass was so long that pedestrians’ progress was inconvenienced.— His Worship explained that the Council’s men wore all occupied of late on the concreting in Broadway. Moved hy Cr. Masters, and seconded hy Cr. Hichards, that Mrs Crawshaw, Bank of Xew Zealand, he informed that the Council could not see its way to spend any more money on the buddings and ground in connection with the recent accident.
