Mr Keir Hardie, the well-known English M.P., is critically ill, suffering from slight paralysis.
The Hon. J. L. Trefle, Minister for Lands and Agriculture in New South Wales, is dead, states a Press Association cable from Sydney.
Mr Robert Spence, of the well-known firm of Spence and Stanford, who has been on a ten months’ trip to Europe and America, arrived safely in Auckland by the Niagara this morning.
Constable F. H. Townsend, an old Otago boy, who for the past four years has been acting-detective at the Nelson station (says the Colonist) has received notice of his transfer, on promotion, to Eltham, as constable in charge.
Residents of Cardiff wd! bo sorry to hear of the death of Mrs Gsc-ge Topp, which occurred at Newstcad, panfUton, yesterday. The Topp fam ily were well known in the district, and left about four years ago for Hamilton. Besides the husband, there is a grown-up family ef four daughters and a son to mourn her loss.
Lieut.-Colonel C. J. Reakes, M.R.C.V.S., V.lb, principal veterinary Services and Remounts, has been appointed colonel. The following majors are appointed lieutenant-colonels: John G. Clayton, M.R.C.V.S., principal veterinary officer, Canterbury military district; William I). Snowball, M.R.C.V.S., V.D., principal vet. inary officer, Otago military district; Alexander R. Young, M.R.C.V.S., principal veterinary officer, Wellington military district; Joseph Lyons, M.R.C.V.S., principal veterinary officer, Auckland, military district.
