A newsboys'* strike against the proposal of the evening papers to increase the price to eightpence for twelve copies instead of fourteen, has been in operation for a week. It started by boycotting the Sun and selling the Evening News, the intention being to force the former to give way and then attack the Evening News. The latter has now refused to supply the newsboys with papers and claim that the vendors make from £5 to £l2 weekly. Both sides are firm. The vendors, who have the support of the suburban agents, have formed an association. ’The proprietors issued {an ultimatum fixing the price at ninepence per dozen. Papers are not procurable in the streets. THE HIGH 'PRICE OF MEAT. tKJtE TO THE TRUST. (Received f 1.40 aim.) Sydney, January 9. A commission opens an-,inquiry into the price of meat on the 18th. Mr Sharp, Federal member for Oxley, Queensland, declares that the high prices are due to the operations of the Meat Trust in Queensland, and he insists that only Federal action is capable of dealing with the matter.
