A newsboys'* strike against the proposal of the evening papers to increase the price to eightpence for twelve copies instead of fourteen, has been in operation for a week. It started by boycotting the Sun and selling the Evening News, the intention being to force the former to give way and then attack the Evening News. The latter has now refused to supply the newsboys with papers and claim that the vendors make from £5 to £l2 weekly. Both sides are firm. The vendors, who have the support of the suburban agents, have formed an association. ’The proprietors issued {an ultimatum fixing the price at ninepence per dozen. Papers are not procurable in the streets. THE HIGH 'PRICE OF MEAT. tKJtE TO THE TRUST. (Received f 1.40 aim.) Sydney, January 9. A commission opens an-,inquiry into the price of meat on the 18th. Mr Sharp, Federal member for Oxley, Queensland, declares that the high prices are due to the operations of the Meat Trust in Queensland, and he insists that only Federal action is capable of dealing with the matter.
LABOR IN WEST AUSTRALIA. (.Received 9.-15 a.m.) Perth, January 9. The Westralian General Workers’ Union lias resolved to amalgamate with the Australian Workers’ Union. STORY OF £2OOO IN STOLEN NODES' (Received 9.45 a.m.i Melbourne, January 9. Investigations in regard to the recent disappearance of £2OOO of Commonwealth notes show it -was a carefulIjvplpnned coup, the parcels of useless paper which replaced the parcels copying the latter in the smallest detail. Apparently the coup was carried out after the parcels left the hands of the Treasury and postal officials. 'S* 1
