FIRE.
NEWMARKET BUSINESS BLOCK. Per Press Association. ) Auckland, January 8. A fire, which caused damage estimated at between £2OOO and £3OOO, occurred at Newmarket this afternoon. The outbreak originated in a living room above the chemist shop of Wilfred Fookes, three rooms being gutted. The flames spread along the wooden rafters, causing damage to the ceilings of three other rooms in the same block. A considerable number of rooms of other shops in the block were damaged by water, the stocks in some cases being also damaged. The premises affected were: Fookes, chemist; W. Lane and Co., tobacconists; C. F. Douglas, fish saloon; Koung Young, fruiterer; and Miss R. Beckmann, confectioner, all damaged by water. The owner of the block is Mr R, H. Abbott. The shops are insured in the Liverpool, London aid Globe Office; Fookes’ stock in the Sun office; Lane’s stock in the Ocean office. Koung Young was also insured, but Douglas was uninsured.
