Innumerable proofs are daily, being received ol the "up-to-dateness" of Canada in war time in the matter of equipment of her troops. The latest illustration of this is the description given of a, wonderful little instrument, neither more nor less than a spade. This, when not in use, will be slung across the shoulders in a leather case. It can be utilised as a shield and a rifle rest, the. rifle, being thrust through an oval hole in the centre of the blade, converting ifc into a shield from the enemy's -'fire. When not i required for this purpose, it can be used for trenching. Although it weighs only 41b, it can be carried with ease on long marches, and it is practically bullet-pr00f.,.. The spades have been ■■subjected., to the> keenest tests, but it was only, after they'had been shot at from a distance of two hundred yards with ' heavy ammunition that any impressicih was made, and then they were onlf cracked. Machine guns, it is said, have been directed on them, but with -no effect,
