Mr Appleton has been re-elected president of the Australian Steamship Owner's Association, a M#lbourne cablegram states. . Hon. Wm. Trefle, Minister of Lands in New South Wales, has been operated on for appendicitis, and his condition is critical, states a Sydney cablegram.
Mr C. Gollop, storekeeper at the local Public Works office for the past eighteen months, has been transferred to the Dunedin office, and leaves in about a fortnight.
Adjutant Tatton, who has. been in charge •£ the local branch. of the Salvation Army for the past twelve months, leaves next week for Waihi. Adjutant Cook, of Auckland, is his successor.
Mr A. P. O'Leary, managing director of the Melbourne Clothing Company, left for Auckland last night en route for England, via Japan. Mr O'Leary is going home on buying business in connection with his firm.
Senior-Sergeant McNeely left on Wednesday for Hawera, where he takes up his new duties as from today. Sergeant Dale, who has been in charge at Newmarket, Auckland, fftr the past five years, will take charge of the Stratford sub-district. 1
Chief Detective Boddam of New Plymouth, was presented on Wednesday evening with a handsome silver-mouiv-ted and engraved cut-glass inkstanf, in view of his departure on promotion to Wellington. Constable Boulton, making the presentation on behalf of the police force of the New Plymouth district, referred to the good fellowship which had always prevailed between the recipient and members of the force.
At a meeting of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesteit day (states the Press Association), D$ Stanley E. Brown was appointed, subject to the Minister's approval, to the position of medical superintendent at the Southland hospital, a position_reii[dered vacant through Dr. removal to Wellington. There weris nine applicants for the position. Dtj. Brown has been acting in a temporary position since Dr.' Barclay left, and prior to gohig south was in charge of the Wanganui hospital for a short period.
