drowning case at awaking. Writes the correspondent of the Waitara Mail: —A sad iatanty occur: td here on Thursday afternoon, through which Mr .1. McC rombic, aged li, employed by Mr Thus. Cummins, farmer, lost his life by drowning. Ihe young man, in company with I'. Cummins, jnnr., left the homesterd about one o’clock for the purpose of ha tiling in the Awakino river. Alter a short run, they both took to Die water, and the pair had only swum a few strokes when McCromhie clutched at Ins companion, who. after trying vainly to assist him, freed himself, swam ashore, and gave the alarm. McCromhie went down in about 16ft of water, and never was seen to come to the surface again. Messrs p Batley and J. Scott, who immediately responded to the call for help, made great efforts to reach the unfortunate lad, Mr Batley diving several times, and though locating, could not reach the body, thq. depth of water being too great. Constable Flannagan, who had been sent for, arrived on the scene some three hours after the accident occurred, and with the aid of grappling irons, soon had the body to the surface. The young man’s parents reside in Auckland. FATAL BUGGY ACCIDENT. Per Press Association. Dannevirke, January 5. At the inquest on Grace Pallesen, the victim of a fatal buggy accident on the Woodville Road, a verdict was returned of death from internal bleeding caused by a buggy accident.
