WAR OF ANNIHILATION.

GERMAN HATRED OF ENGLAND, NO MERCY AND NO QUARTER. Writes the London correspondent of the Otago Daily Times: It is well that the, outlying portions of the Empire should realise the bitter hatred now entertained by Germans against this country. Privy Councillor Witting, formerly Burgomaster of Posen, and president of the National Bank of Germany, has given the Berlin cor respondent of the New York Sun an interview, which there is every reason to believe correctly represents the German view. “It is a fight between England and Germany to the bitter end, to the last German if need be,” says Herr Witting. “It is a war of annihilation between these two courttries and nations. England has wanted it, so let it be. We want no quarter from England; we shall give none. We shall never ask England for mercy and we shall extend no mercy to her. “England and England alotte brought on this criminal war, out of greed and out of envy, to crush Germany, and now it is death, destruction, and annihilation for one or the other of the two nations. Tell your American people that, and say these words do not come from a fanatic, but from a quiet business man, and one who knows the feeling of his people and who knows* what is at stake in this titanic strug-j gle brought on by that criminal nation Quivering with emotion, Herr Witting continued: “God, how we hate England and the English! That nation j of hyproorites and criminals which brought this rniresy upon ns and the world, and what for?—for greed and envy, to crush tiro Gentian nation because she Found herself decadent and felt Iter dominance and domineering in the world endangered. “Do you think if England ami France had gone to war we would have taken i the mean advantage in attack and crush France? Did Germany attack; Russia and humiliate that country, as j well she might have done during the! Japanese war? No; Germany was too i honorable. Only England, tire self-1 "errsiitilted cliMiiioioti of freedom, per-i lidions Albion, stoops to such things|

and Iras the effrontery to pose as the defender of human rights. England, that country which oppresses more people to-day than any other nation on earth.” ‘Tell America not to he misled by peace talk. There is not going to be any peace. It will be a long war. We prepared for three years. In the end it will develop into a struggle between England and Germany. The English are determined to destroy our Fatherland. We have accepted the challenge. No Government would survive in Germany that attempted to make peace tin vi terms dictated by England, whether the war lasts one year of 25 years.”
