THE PRISONERS OF WAR IN GERMANY. United Press Association. (Received 8.50 a.m.) Amsterdam, January 1. A telegram from Berlin states that the prisoners of war in, Germany number 8138 officers and 577,875 men, including 492 British officers and 18,824 men.

The Kaiser, in a New Year message, says: The, army has gained brilliant victories, and the enemy’s repeated attempts to swarm on to German teintory failed. My ships have covered themselves with glory in every sea, ?uid the crews have proved- they know liow to fight victoriously .and die heroically. The entire nation stands amid unexampled harmony, prepared.to sacrice their hearts’ blood against outrageous invasion. We still firmly keep the enemy low, although fresh hordes are always following, and their numbers do not frighten us. The task before ns is heavy, but we may look to the future with the firmest confidence,.. Next to God’s guidance, T trust the matchless bravery of the army and nnvv.”
