Official: Isolated German attacks between the lower Vistula and the Pilitza proved abortive. An attack south-east of Swierniwice resulted in grave German losses. The Austrians evacuated the left bank of the Nida, and were driven out to Szitniki after obstinate defence. Fighting on the Apatovee-Briecz line continues to favour the Russians, who captured from the 18th to the 26th 200 officers, 15,000 men, and forty machine guns. The enemy’s retreat to the Dukla Pass is now precipitate and disorderly. Five thousand were taken prisoners on the 20th. The enemy’s attempt to transport the troops from Czenstochowa to the Carpathians was completely frustrated.

During the fighting at Latovoza, despite the Russian bombardment of the ice, the Austrians attempted to cross. The Russians attacked in dmnd-to-hand combats, and the ice was broken. The struggles continued in the icy water, and often the foes helped one another on to the ice and fought on.

THE LOSSES AT PRZEMYSL.

Advices from Hungary state that two regiments at Przemysl sortied nightly for a fortnight, and seldom more than one regiment i-eturned. The garrison have now lost 30,000. RUSSIAN StRATECIC OPERATIONS. (Received 9.0 a.m.) Petrograd, December 29. Reports of the Russian investment of Cracow have been again raised. Following the discovery that the Austrians attempted to divide the Rus. sians in Galicia, the Russians retired to the eastwards fifty miles.

Despatches from Galicia state that the Russians crossed the Bialo river and seized the country southward of Larnow, thereby separating the two Austrian armies, who attempted to press on to soft ground which will prove an advantage to the Russians and precipitate decisive operations.
