SPORTING.
NEW PLYMOUTH RACES. Splendid weather prevailed at New Plymouth lor the opening day ol' the Taranaki jockey Club's Christmas meeting. The meeting was highly successful, a record crowd of over 5000 being present. The Club had made every arrangement 'or the comfort of patrons, and the and lawns were in first-class condition, insuring good going. The many improvements made by the Club were greatly appreciated, especially the "outside" stand. TJiore were few surprises in the first day's races. The performance of L. Xotider in riding winners in four consecutive races was perhaps the most noticeable feature. The finishes were good. Mr T. Cameron was starter, Mr J. It. L. Stanford judging the racing, being relieved by Mr A. W. Budge in the fourth event. Only one rider was cautioned during the day. Music was supplied by the Citizens' Band, under Bandmaster Cummins, i The catering was in the hands of Mr A. Wooller, and the licensed booth in those of Mr F. Whittle. Investments % the day were £16,279, as against £14,312 on the first day of last year. RESULTS: Huatoki Plate, of 75 sovs. Weight for ago. An enquiry was held into the riding of Kattua, but no action was taken. The owner of Xgapoto was fined for late scratching.'

Won, by a head, with Te Hou Hou half a length away. Time 2min 13sec. The stewards cautioned McCabe for careless riding. AUCKLAND R.C. MEETING.

The Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting opened to-day under ideal conditions. The totalisator investments were £66,146, as against £63.611 for the corresponding day of last year. The riding of Enierson was twice the subject of anfinquiry by the stewards, and be was cautioned for alleged interference with Desert Gold in the Foal Stakes and for alleged interference with Reputation in the Cun. Two horses fell in the Nursery Handicap, Credo and Mountain Dream. The 'former broke its leg and had to be shot. The stewards decided that the fall was accidental. In the same race L. Brown was cautioned for alleged boring. Results:—

A Thames P.A. wire states: The racehorse Ruffy received fatal injuries this morning. Another . horse, Revelation, got out of hand and collided with the Auckland horse, which sustained such injuries that it had to he shot.
A later message states that Ruffy was not killed, bu twns carried off the field, and is in; the hands of a vet.
